The Google & Yahoo rule
Since February 2024, any domain sending roughly 5,000 or more messages a day to Gmail or Yahoo addresses must publish SPF, DKIM, and a DMARC record, or that mail bounces or lands in spam. Even senders under the threshold benefit: most major inbox providers now weigh authentication heavily in spam filtering regardless of volume.
What counts as "bulk"
The threshold catches more domains than it sounds like. A small SaaS sending password resets, receipts, and a weekly newsletter can cross 5,000 messages a day well before it feels like a "bulk sender." If your domain sends any transactional or marketing mail at scale, assume the rule applies.
What this check does not cover
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are necessary but not sufficient. Google and Yahoo also require a spam complaint rate under 0.3%, one-click List-Unsubscribe headers on marketing mail, and valid reverse DNS on your sending IPs, none of which are visible from a DNS lookup alone. A pass here means your authentication is in place, not that you are fully compliant. Run a full scan for the wider picture.
Fixing a fail, in order
